Project Plan and Evaluation Criteria
for the C.L.A.S.S.I.C. Project

Collaborative Planning and Development

The principal investigator is frequently in the schools of western Kansas as a clinical supervisor, curriculum development consultant, or as a visiting NCA team member.  Through personal observation and in visiting with administers and teachers, the need for increase science knowledge and training in research-based delivery strategies was evident.  Additional areas of staff development supports indicted were:  authentic assessment development, including rubrics; cooperative learning strategies; and integration of assessed indictors from the Kansas standards into all aspects of the curriculum.  This information was taken to Regi Weiland, Director of FHEDC, and a partnership ensured.

In preparing for the project, the director with the assistance of FHEDC staff, conducted a needs assessment of districts in western Kansas representative of the FHSU service area.  Administrators of each district received assessment surveys and cover letters sketching the proposed C.L.A.S.S.I.C. project.  The survey was designed to inform FHEDC and the director of the districts’ needs for services including staff development in natural science content and pedagogy; hands-on, inquiry-based instruction; development of natural science materials; and delivery models.  These findings provided the impetus for the C.L.A.S.S.I.C. project.

The principal investigator also presented the grant proposal to a meeting of FHEDC principals in September, 2000.  Principals were generally favorable to the project.  Several returned Statements of Agreement as support of the project.
